Aurora Nails: How to Wear the Dreamy Iridescent Manicure

Aurora nail designs

Chrome has been booked and busy for years, but aurora nails are the more ethereal branch currently taking over everyone’s saved folder. The trend has roots in Korean and Japanese nail art, several overlapping names and more versions than the internet can agree on – from icy translucent sets to dark multichrome manis. Ahead, I’m breaking down what actually counts as an aurora design, the best ways to wear it and which products are worth trying.

What are aurora nails?

Aurora manicures are inspired by the changing colors of the aurora borealis. The defining feature is movement: the manicure changes color or intensity depending on the angle, lighting and position of the hand.

The original Korean aurora manicures that started popping up on our feeds around 2020 mainly used magnetic gel polish. Tiny metallic particles inside the gel were moved with a magnet before curing, producing a shifting stripe, halo or velvet-like glow.

The result sits somewhere between cat-eye nails, multichrome polish and a tiny weather system happening on your fingertip. But that is only one branch of the trend. Aurora is also used for Korean ice nails, glass-candy nails and uru uru nails.

These sets layer opal pigment, pearl powder or holographic film inside translucent gel, creating reflections that look suspended beneath the surface rather than rubbed directly on top.

The best aurora manicures usually combine three things: a translucent base, an iridescent or magnetic element and a thick glassy top layer. Jelly and syrup gels are popular because they tint the design while keeping the lower layers visible.

An opaque crème polish can technically carry aurora powder, but it will look more like standard chrome and lose some of that frozen depth.

How to wear aurora nails

Your base color controls almost everything. The same powder or magnetic pigment can look soft and pearly over one shade, then turn fully multichrome over another.

For the clean glazed version, start with sheer pink, milky white or translucent nude. Add a fine pink-blue or lilac-gold shift over the top. This is the least intimidating way to wear the trend and works beautifully on short squoval, round or almond shapes.

For actual northern-lights color, go for icy blue, aqua, lavender or pale green jelly gel with a magnetic velvet effect. Keep the magnetized pigment spread across the nail for a soft glow, or pull it into one defined line for a sharper cat-eye finish.

For the full ice-nail treatment, ask for holographic film or aurora flakes encapsulated beneath clear builder gel. The best versions have visible layers: a sheer base, floating reflective pieces, pearl pigment and a smooth domed surface.

For a darker set, apply aurora powder over navy, black, deep plum, burgundy or chocolate. Translucent powders that read pale blue and pink over light bases can shift green, bronze or gold over dark polish.

Aurora French tips are another excellent route. Use a clear or sheer pink base and keep the reflective finish on the tips, either as a traditional curved French, an angled edge or a chrome outline.

For mixed sets, I would combine solid magnetic nails with one or two translucent film accents. Chrome swirls, water-drop gel details and small crystals also work, but aurora already has a lot happening under the light.

Products to check out

Kokoist Aurora Design Film – this is the pick for proper Korean ice nails. The pre-cut iridescent film is encapsulated under builder gel to create that thick, glassy, gemstone effect – best left to a salon unless you already work with gel.

PrettyDiva Aurora Chrome Powder – rub this over cured no-wipe gel for a smooth color-shifting glaze. It looks soft and pearly over pale shades, then turns much bolder over black or dark polish.

Aimeili Aurora Borealis Gel Polish Set – this six-piece gel set gives you translucent color with a pearly shift built in. Wear the shades alone, over milky pink or over black for a completely different finish.

Cosmoo Aurora Iridescent Nail Polish – A good regular-polish option for anyone avoiding lamps and gel. It gives nails a sheer pink-pearl shimmer and looks especially good over white, blush or lavender.

Paint It Pretty Polish Aurora Borealis – this magnetic lacquer shifts through teal, blue, purple and pink over a black base. Use a magnet to create a cat-eye beam, curved halo or full velvet glow – no curing lamp required.

Emily de Molly Key Drama – this one is a clear topper packed with electric blue aurora shimmer. One coat can completely change pink, purple, navy or black polish, which is excellent news for the drawer already fighting for its life.

ILNP Real Magic Toppers – these shift through blue, purple, green and pink depending on the shade. Layer them over milky polish for a softer flash or black for the full multichrome situation.

For the easiest DIY version, apply a sheer pink or jelly base, add one coat of iridescent topper and finish with a thick glossy topcoat. For magnetic lacquer, work one nail at a time while the polish is wet, hold the wand close without touching the surface and repeat the magnet step after topcoat.

When booking a salon appointment, bring a reference photo and be specific. Ask for magnetic aurora or cat-eye gel when you want a moving light band. Ask for Korean ice nails, glass-candy nails or uru uru nails with encapsulated holographic film when you want the layered glass effect.

And that’s a wrap

If simple manis leave you cold – or you’re officially hard-launching your cool-girl nail era – aurora designs are the move. They can go fairycore, mermaidcore, soft glam, high-glam or full sci-fi depending on the base color and finish, and they work just as well on short natural nails as they do on long sculpted sets.

DIY with an iridescent topper or magnetic polish, or book a pro for the layered ice-nail version. Either way, the color shift is doing serious overtime.
