22 Short September Nail Designs for the Summer-to-Fall Switch

September nail appointments come with one question: are we still doing summer, or is it burgundy o’clock? These 20+ short September nail designs refuse to pick a side: blue micro French tips and milky pink are still on the table, but tortoise shell, brown chrome and deep plum have officially arrived. I’ve also added polish recommendations for anyone hunting down similar shades. Let’s go.

1. Deep Red Nails

My favorite September switch: bright summer red out, deep red in. Cherry, burgundy, garnet and ruby all look good on short nails - pick your expensive-looking red and proceed. And for everyone zooming in, the shade in the pic is Kinetics #660 Goals.

2. Floral Nail Art

We’re keeping the flowers and changing their dress code. Dark burgundy, butter yellow, polka dots and gold-bead flower centers will take your shorties into early fall. It’s still sunflower season, so anyone declaring floral nail art “over” can unclench.

3. Burgundy & Blue Stripes

Burgundy for early fall, denim blue because we’re still attached to summer. Put them together in thick, glossy stripes and your short September manicure is sorted. Not into burgundy? Chocolate brown works just as well here.

4. Clean Milky White

For the short-nail crowd keeping September simple, milky white is an easy yes. It’s polished enough for work, school, weddings, or whatever is on your calendar. DND Milky White #2439 is my go-to for a natural-looking white that doesn’t turn chalky.

5. Short Plum Nails

Plum is back in the September rotation, as predictable as me suddenly wanting every nail color five shades darker. Go full coverage on most nails, then add plum side swoops edged in silver glitter to the accents. My polish pick is Londontown Elderberry, obviously.

6. Cat Eye Effect

Brown and taupe are already perfect transitional colors, but add cat-eye shimmer and polka dots and suddenly the neutrals have a personality. It’s a good middle ground when you’re ready for fall shades but not ready to go full dark manicure yet.

7. Soft Mauve

Pink nail girlies don’t have to go cold turkey this month. Mauve’s muted purple-pink passes as a neutral between seasons. I love Ella+Mila Time for a Bond Fire on short nails with a light gold-glitter dusting. A very manageable amount of fancy.

8. Neutral Short Mani

OPI Can’t Hardly Wait makes a good base for anyone who absolutely can wait for full fall colors. Add opaque white freeform swirls over the beige, and you’ve got short September nails that retire the summer brights at a sensible pace.

9. Animal Print Mix

Burnt orange brings the early-fall color; gray and beige keep the mix wearable. Alternate those full-coverage bases, then add abstract black zebra stripes and cow-print accents to selected nails.

10. Solid Sapphire Blue

Dusty rose is officially high on fall 2026 agenda. Pair it with light pink, add stripes and polka dots, and you’ve got a playful early autumn manicure without one pumpkin in sight. Try Sienna Rosie or Olive & June Lovely for the deeper shade.

12. Brown Chrome Set

Last fall, everyone lost it over glazed brown manis. The 2026 forecast says we’ll be doing that again. My favorite combo is OPI Squeaker of the House topped with Tin Man Can Glaze powder. Repeat behavior fully endorsed.

13. Pink & White French

Micro white French tips are bringing September discipline, but the milky pink base is still on summer hours. It adds more color than a classic sheer base while keeping the whole manicure clean, elegant and ready for work or school.

14. Stars & Polka Dots

Stars and polka dots made it through summer and have no plans to leave. Shift them into early fall with dark brown and baby blue, alternating between full-color nails and French tips. The viral motifs stayed; the palette lowered its voice.

This is the cute route into tortie shell season. Start with a light pink mani, then add tortie spots in amber, caramel and dark brown. The print brings fall into the chat, while the pink keeps everything fresh enough for the final stretch of summer.

17. Olive Green & Brown

Olive-green takeover has already started, and an earthy skittle mani is an excellent way in. Spread full coverage olive, espresso brown and beige across the set, leaving a few nails completely covered in gold glitter.

18. Starry Black Mani

Black-nail loyalists do not need a seasonal intervention. Keep the color and update the layout instead: solid glossy black across most of the set, with a few sheer accent nails covered in black stars.

19. Negative Space Red

A solid red mani feels too predictable, so we’re taking a more complicated route this month. Layer abstract red curves over a sheer base, changing the placement on every nail, then add one micro gem at each cuticle.

20. Deep Teal Nails

Deep teal already brings enough color to short nails, so nail art isn’t required. It carries summer’s huge blue-green trend into fall without feeling like a repeat of the same shade story. For reference, I love Cracked Polish Teal Dark and Handsome.

21. Plaid & Polka Dots

Cozy-core fans, your nail appointment has been decided. Combine butter yellow and brown, then fill the design with polka dots, plaid lines and teeny bows. It’s sweet, snuggly and dressed like a teddy bear with a serious nail-art budget.

22. Blue Skittle French

If September still means short end-of-summer mani to you, this is it. Give every nail a Frenchie in a different blue, moving from deep navy to the palest powder shade. Tiny gems and gold beads bring the sparkle; moody colors can wait their turn.
